2018 PRIZE CATEGORIES AND ELIGIBILITY
NOTE: Employees of Inner West Council and City of Canterbury Bankstown Council are not eligible to enter.
 

Entry forms, images and fees must be submitted via this website.

Completed entry forms and fees, must be received by 5pm, Monday 14 October 2019.  Please do not send original artworks at this time.

 

All entries must be the original work of the submitting artist and have been produced after 14 October 2018. 

Artists may submit more than one artwork.  (Please see section 2. for details.)  An online entry form for each artwork must be submitted.

a)  Entries for the Open, Local Artist or Small Sculpture categories, should include a high resolution digital image of the proposed artwork and a brief artist statement (max 150 words).

b)  The image file should be named “surname_firstname_title_medium_size”, and must be in jpeg format and no larger than 2MB.

c)  For the GreenWay Community Photography Prize, please submit jpeg files that are no larger than 5MB.  Please see section 2. d) for further details.

d) A one page artist CV may be included for The GreenWay Open Art Prize only.

Incomplete entries, late entries, or those that do not meet the stated criteria, will not be considered.

2. Categories & Prizes

 

A limit of two works per artist can be submitted to any of the main prizes* (the GreenWay Open Art Prize, the GreenWay Local Artist Prize or the Cooks River Small Sculpture Prize). For example, you may enter one artwork into the GreenWay Open Prize and one into the Local Artist Prize, or two artworks into a single category.

In addition, you may enter two works in the GreenWay Community Photography Prize.

*Please submit a separate entry form for each entry. 

a) 2019 GreenWay Open Art Prize - $6,000 including exhibition package

Open to all artists, anywhere in Australia or abroad, established or emerging, represented or unrepresented.

The winner receives a total cash prize of $5,000 and a solo exhibition package valued at $1000.  The two-week solo exhibition is to take place at Art Est. Art School and Gallery within a year of the 2018 GreenWay Art Prize exhibition, at the discretion of the Art Est. Art School and Gallery Director.
 

Artworks will be selected based on their artistic merit and relevance to one or more of the GreenWay themes of the urban environment, community connections and sustainable transport in Sydney’s Inner West.

NB: 3D artworks are eligible for this category as long as they can be wall mounted, and are under 1m in height and width and not more than 300mm deep.

 

b) 2019 GreenWay Local Artist Prize - $1,500

Open to all artists living or working within Inner West Council or City of Canterbury-Bankstown municipalities. 

Artworks will be selected based on their artistic merit and relevance to one or more of the GreenWay themes of the urban environment, community connections and sustainable transport in Sydney’s Inner West.

c) 2019 Cooks River Small Sculpture Prize – $2,000

Open to all artists, anywhere in Australia or abroad, established or emerging, represented or unrepresented.

Art works will be selected based on their artistic merit and relevance to one or more of the GreenWay and Cooks River themes of waterways, the urban environment, community connections and sustainable transport in Sydney’s Inner West.

d) 2019 GreenWay Community Photography Prize: Adult – Winner $500, 2nd place $300

Open to all artists, anywhere in Australia or abroad, established or emerging, represented or unrepresented

Photographs will be selected according to their artistic merit and relevance to the theme of ‘Communities of the GreenWay’.  Photographs must have been taken in the vicinity of the GreenWay, and after 14 October 2018. 

2019 GreenWay Community Photography Prize: Youth (under 18), Winner $200, 2nd place $100

The Youth GreenWay Community Photography Prize is free to enter.  Entrants must be under 18 years of age as at 14 October 2019. Photographs will be selected according to their artistic merit and relevance to the theme of ‘Communities of the GreenWay’. Photographs must have been taken in the vicinity of the GreenWay, and after 14 October 2018.

 

Selected photographs will be included on the GreenWay Art Prize website and/or Instagram page captioned with artist acknowledgements. They will also be displayed on an interactive screen in the Gallery space at Art Est Art School, Seaview Gallery and Bankstown Arts Centre.

 

e) All entries are eligible for the Derivan People’s Choice Award
$500 voucher for Derivan Matisse art supplies to be announced on 20 November 2019

 

3. Number of Artworks

 

Artists may submit up to two artworks in any of the main categories, plus up to two photographs in the GreenWay Community Photography Prize. Please submit a separate entry form for each artwork entered.

Still images only may be submitted for the Photography Prize - no videos or moving images please.

All works submitted must be the work of the entrant.

4. Fees

 

A fee of $25 per entry (per artwork entered) is payable - i.e. if you are entering two artworks, the total entry fee is $50. See the entry form for payment options. The fee is inclusive of GST and is non-refundable.

The entry fee for the GreenWay Community Photography Prize is $10 per entry for the adult prize (max 2 entries). There is no fee to submit for the Youth Prize (max 2 entries).

5. Selection of Work & Notification

 

Images of all artworks submitted online will be reviewed by the curatorial panel.  Notification of selection for exhibition or non-selection will be emailed on Friday 18 October 2019.  (There will be no shortlisting stage this year).

The finalists' artworks selected will be displayed in the 2019 GreenWay Art Prize exhibition at Art Est. Art School & Gallery.

Some works will be selected from the exhibition at Art Est. Art School & Gallery to tour to Seaview Gallery, Dulwich Hill in November, and / or Bankstown Arts Centre in December - January, and artists will be notified accordingly.

 

6. Delivery  & Collection of Artworks

 

Selected works are to be delivered to Art Est. at the following times:

2pm – 4pm Sunday 20 October

10am – 4pm Monday 21 October

Works not delivered at the designated time will be disqualified from final adjudication and ineligible for exhibition.

Works not selected for touring are to be collected:

10am - 5pm Wednesday 20 November (or after hours by appointment)

Artworks selected for touring to Seaview Gallery, Dulwich Hill and / or Bankstown Arts Centre are to be collected from Art Est. :

3pm - 6pm Monday 20 January 2020

10am - 5pm Tuesday 21 January 2020

Uncollected works will be recycled or disposed of thoughtfully.

 

7. Transport & Insurance

 

Collection and return freight is the responsibility of the exhibitor including all transit insurance. The GreenWay and Art Est. will exercise due-care of all works but accepts no responsibility for loss or damage of art works while in its custody or during transit.  Art Est., Seaview Gallery and Bankstown Arts Centre hold public liability insurance and fire protection insurance. Additional insurance, if desired, is the responsibility of the entrant, although reasonable care will be taken to ensure the safety of the works while on the premises.

 

8. Medium & Size Restrictions 

a) Open Art Prize and Local Artist Prize

Painting, drawing, print, or digital media works will be accepted. Two-dimensional works must not exceed 100 cm in width or height (including any frame) Sculptural works must be suitable for hanging on the gallery wall.

b) Small Sculpture Prize

Small sculptures (for entry into the Cooks River Small Sculpture Prize) must not exceed 45cm in width, height or depth. Works must be stable and not fragile, and must be suitable for display on a plinth. (See 9. for details)  

Please do not submit excessively heavy works. The Gallery reserves the right to reject any works considered too unstable for safe display, or too difficult to handle or install.

c) Community Photography Prize

Photographic works may be in colour or black and white and can be enhanced or digitally altered. Please submit jpeg files that are no greater than 5MB and can be clearly viewed on a screen. Still images only may be submitted – no videos or moving images please.  Photographs must be high resolution (HD, 1920x1080).  If you are chosen as a finalist, you may be required to submit a higher resolution image. 

 

9. Preparation and Display of Artwork 

 

Prints, drawings and works on paper etc must be professionally mounted and framed. Paintings must be ready for hanging (framed or stretched canvas). Works must be secured with D rings attached 7.5cm from the top edge OR have a professional hanging cord attached one third of the way down from the top edge. Works that comprise more than one piece (e.g. diptychs, triptychs, etc.) should be joined together as one item to facilitate hanging. 

Works with hanging wire, inappropriate cord, screw eyes or other protruding metal or wire will not be accepted. Wet artworks will NOT BE accepted.

If the work requires a hanging device other than D-rings, the artist must supply all fixtures and instructions for hanging. Works without this will not be accepted.  Please do not submit excessively heavy works.  

Small sculptures will be displayed on plinths belonging to Art Est. Art School and Gallery. Artists may provide their own plinths at the discretion of gallery staff. The Gallery may use museum wax or double-sided tape for securing works.

Finalists' photographs will be presented digitally in the gallery space.  Winners will be asked to mount and frame their work for display in the gallery spaces.

All display requirements must be provided by the artist.

10. Labelling

 

Please label all uploaded files with the following format - “surname_firstname_title_medium_size”.

Shortlisted works must be clearly marked with entrant’s name, contact address, email and telephone number, the title, the price of the work (if for sale); and the category into which it has been entered.  Any display requirements should also be attached.

 

11. Exhibition & Touring

 

The finalists’ artworks will be displayed in the 2019 GreenWay Art Prize exhibition at Art Est. Art School & Gallery, Studio 4, 67-69 Lords Road, Leichhardt from Thursday 31 October – Tuesday 19 November 2019.

A selection of finalists will be invited to participate in a touring exhibition to the following venues from late November until 19 January 2020. 

 

Touring dates:

Seaview Gallery, Dulwich High School of Visual Arts and Design, Seaview Street, Dulwich Hill: Monday 25 November – Saturday 30 November

Bankstown Arts Centre, 5 Olympic Parade, Bankstown: Tuesday 3 December – Thursday 19 January 2020

All works selected for exhibition must remain on show for the duration of the exhibition.

No early collection will be accommodated.

Decisions on the placement of works will be made by our curatorial panel, with equal respect for all artists who have contributed work. These decisions will be final.

12. Judging

 

Prior to the exhibition opening, a panel of independent judges will assess the selected works, and allocate awards for each category, with the exception of the People’s Choice Award, which will be chosen by public vote at the end the exhibition period.  Selected prize winners will be notified in advance of the exhibition opening to ensure their attendance.   Winners will be announced at the Opening Night awards presentation.

The decision of the judges will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

13. Promotion

 

The artist grants the exhibition galleries, the GreenWay Program and its supporting Councils to use the artist’s name and/or reproductions/images of artworks for any purpose related to the exhibition, its promotion and associated activities. The GreenWay Art Prize and its affiliates will at all times attribute authorship of the Work to the artist and all reproductions will include a full credit for the work as supplied by the artist. All intellectual property rights in the work are owned by the Artist.

 

14. Sales & commission

 

Exhibited artworks may be offered for sale at the artists’ discretion.  Art Est. will retain a commission of 25% of the sale price of the artwork, exclusive of GST. Should you have an existing arrangement with your own agent, the commission to Art Est. will be 50% of your standard commission with your agent.  If an artist is registered for GST, the sale price must include the GST amount.

As the artist, you retain title to each artwork. If the work is sold, title passes directly to the buyer. Copyright of each artwork is and remains with you, the artist.

15. Ineligibility

 

Employees of Inner West and City of Canterbury Bankstown Councils are not eligible to enter this competition.
