Sydney Sandstone (circle 1)

70 x 70cm

In this work, I have ground Sydney sandstone to a fine dust and worked it into the paper surface. The sandstone, though difficult to capture in photographs, has a luminous quality that seems to resonate light. The circular form and materiality of the work evoke a sense of calm and invite contemplation. The intention with this work is to sit with and contemplate geological scales of time and encourage a sense of 'timefulness.' Geologist Marcia Bjornerud recommends a habit of timefulness to counter our species' lack of temporal proportion, saying we are oblivious to the intrinsic timescales of natural capital like groundwater systems and 'have a childlike disinterest and partial disbelief in the time before our appearance on Earth.' As sandstone takes millions of years to form, the circle works become a meditation on time itself.
