Floating Litter Barrier Hawthorne Canal

62cm x 72cm

As an avid long term beachcomber, I created this mosaic image of the Hawthorne Canal litter boom from plastic pieces collected from the the beaches of Sydney Harbour and Botany Bay. Despite concerted efforts by Inner West Council and Sydney Water to limit plastic pollution entering the waterways, it is a possibility that some of the plastic pieces incorporated in this artwork may have originated from the Greenway catchment area. We are rapidly accelerating into a world of ubiquitous plastic saturation and global plastic pollution. Alarming scientific research on the far ranging and detrimental effects of plastics in the environment, to marine life and to human health is becoming more widely known. Plastic doesn't biodegrade, it just breaks down into smaller and smaller fragments. It is these micro and nano plastic particles which are can enter the human body, and are now found everywhere and in everything from plankton to whales.
