When Covid hit in 2020 it felt like we were entering a strange new world that had no script. My daily walks by the Cooks River near my home became both meditation and escape. Abandoning the techniques of my previous practice I constructed imaginary landscapes with different focus and viewpoints within the frame: metaphors for my failing vision and the fragmented nature of my life. Surrender to chance and randomness was a joyful counterpoint to the grim daily news and social controls imposed by lockdown. The riverbank where I made this work is lined with She-Oaks. Significant in Indigenous culture, the whispering of the She-Oaks is that of the female elders who keep the space safe. I was at peace there and felt a strong spiritual connection. I found solace in the work I created in this healing place, I discovered strange beauty in adversity and hope for better times.
