Only Through Darkness, We See the Blinding Light

Synthetic polymer painted on layers of chiffon,

40cmx 40cm

This painting explores the journey from darkness to light, capturing the essence of hope during the COVID-19 lockdowns. Within the limited 5km radius, walks along the Canal and the Bay Run offered a sense of normality, with sunlight breaking through trees as a symbol of better days ahead. The contrast between shadow and light highlights the idea that only through darkness can we truly appreciate the brilliance of the light—a metaphor for the resilience and hope that emerged during adversity. The use of two layers of translucent chiffon adds depth, creating a layered visual experience that shifts with the viewer’s perspective. This technique mimics the fluid nature of memories, where different elements come into focus over time. The painting invites the viewer to engage in a personal journey through remembrance and perception, finding light and hope in even the darkest times.
