In 2020 I lost my bush and bird loving Dad to Alzheimer’s. Magpies were his favourites - birds he always stopped to greet with a 'Hello Maggie!' In Dad’s final months when much had faded, he still smiled warmly in recognition of my face. I was reminded of his advice… 'Say hi to the magpies - they remember faces, you know!' In the pandemic-haze following Dad’s death, I took my kids on endless walks through our local green corridor, reconnecting with my own childhood memories of bushwalk adventures with Dad. I was lucky to have those experiences, and we are fortunate to have this place now. The Greenway provides habitat for birds like the magpie whose numbers are declining due to urban sprawl and increasingly smaller backyards. 'Hello Maggie’ features cable ties my kids and I collected on our walks – dropped in abundance when social distancing signs were removed. Let’s protect green spaces so that Magpies continue to appear for us to say hi.
