Echoes of the Mangrove
wood, black coated wire
20 x 33 x 8cm
'Echoes of the Mangrove' is a reflection on the lost beauty of the Cooks River, which was once surrounded by a lush mangrove forest before colonisation. This piece, crafted from reclaimed wood scraps, depicts three floating trees against a backdrop of stars, symbolising the lingering memory of what once was. The work draws inspiration from the Japanese kanji for 'forest,' which is composed of three tree symbols. It invites viewers to ponder the idea that if each of us were to plant or nurture just three trees, we might begin to restore the ancient harmony of the mangrove and eucalyptus forests around the Cooks River. Through this artwork, I hope to spark a conversation about revitalisation and the power of collective action in preserving our natural heritage.
