possum pelt, sandstone slabs
One of the most widespread of Australian tree-dwelling marsupials, the common brushtail possum is found across most of NSW in woodlands, rainforests and urban areas. The woodland and rainforest areas possums live in are shrinking, and you will find that these native Australian animals are adapted for life amongst dwellings, roofs including the Cooks River area. Possums mark their territory with secretions from scent glands and have a home range of up to 7 hectares. You’ll also find them as roadkill from perilous trips across suburban roads from one tree to another. They do not have boundaries but humans do and there is a great divide when it comes to living with possums. The weight of the sandstone slabs on the possum skin represents the ongoing push for urbanisation which pushes possums further away from their homes whether it be a roof or a tree in the Cooks River area.
