Lili Allon
Relic from the river
clay and glaze
23 x 30cm
This piece draws deeply from the inspiration provided by the Cooks River. The vessel’s traditional vase shape is intentionally juxtaposed with deliberate imperfections, embodying a dialogue between historical form and natural irregularity. The vase was left exposed to the rain during the creation process, allowing nature to interact directly with the clay. This exposure resulted in unique marks and patterns, mirroring the river’s shaping forces. The essence of the Cooks River is embedded within this work, manifesting through the choice of colours, the tactile textures, and even the inclusion of the white trevally. This fish, a resident of the river, serves as a living testament to the ecosystem and further connects the piece to its source of inspiration. Overall, the vase becomes a tangible representation of the river’s character and spirit. It is a fusion of tradition and transformation embracing the fluidity and unpredictability inherent in the natural world.
