Heat Leak

watercolour on paper

46 x 25cm

Heat Leak' relates to the Greenway themes of environment, community activities and natural habitats by depicting in a semi-abstracted style a streetscape. I painted 'Heat Leak' from memory, after walking very slowly down a familiar street, in order to go back to the studio and distill the scene into an evocative and impressionistic landscape study. I have used watercolour on paper, working wet-on-wet, to depict the varying depths of light and shadow during the afternoon. This painting is based on my own ongoing investigation into the interrelated nature of sunlight, healing and walking. 'Heat Leak' is marked by this sensitivity to surroundings. A long calligraphic paintbrush was used to render the long summer shadows, the gestural brushstrokes successfully capturing and distilling the essence of environment - a semi-abstracted streetscape, with trees, recycling bins out for collection and cars parked in the quiet street. Cushioned in a pea-green interior and matching frame, this work is a meditative study of the natural world, albeit a family and urban one. I invite the viewer to reflect on the effects of sunlight and the natural world around us; to see a familiar view with fresh eyes.
