Waste and landfill are major environmental issues. Recycling, reusing and upcycling are all helpful strategies available to each of us to reduce their negative impacts and, importantly, to provide opportunities to limit consumerism. This coffee table was made from a discarded pallet rescued from the rubbish pile of a local Leichhardt building site, lugged home, and upcycled into a hero piece of furniture. The pallet’s reuse averted a significant bit of landfill, saved a few trees and spared the less obvious impacts and costs associated with its collection, transport and disposal. The work is a reminder of our potential to help the environment and a symbol of the potential we, as individuals, have to make positive contributions to this fragile planet.
